Job Description

We are looking for someone passionate about social justice and skilled in written, verbal and digital communication to join us as a Communications Officer at Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit (GMIAU). This is an important new role – it’s about how we use our voice effectively to make change for and with people subjected to immigration control, and about how we connect with people who need our support.

Please go to: https://gmiau.org/opportunity-communications-officer/ for the full application pack.

The new Communications Officer will:

  • Work with colleagues to publish and disseminate clear and accurate legal information, and ensure that information is up-to-date
  • Conduct research into GMIAU’s audiences and needs, working with communities to develop our communications work
  • Take a lead on our digital communications including our social media, website management, and email newsletter

We hope the impact of this post will be:

  • To strengthen and develop our connections with communities, digital and in-person
  • To create real structural change and authentically tell the story of how immigration control affects people we work and live alongside in the North West of England
  • To maximise the impact of our legal expertise by disseminating high quality legal information
  • To ensure people approaching GMIAU for help feel heard, and are provided with practical support
  • To ensure our communications work – how we speak about issues, the methods we use to communicate, and the informative materials we produce – is developed in partnership with people with lived experience of immigration control

The Communications Officer will be working in the Policy Team (read more about the team in the About GMIAU document in the application pack). They will help the Policy Team communicate our research, advocacy, and campaigning work effectively. They will also work closely with colleagues across the whole organisation, including casework staff, and with the people who use our services.

We encourage people with lived experience of immigration or asylum to apply for this role. We are committed to supporting and developing your skills.
