Job Description

After 3 years of managing our charity, our wonderful CEO is stepping down and heading into retirement. We are now seeking a new Chief Executive to steer and grow the charity as we step into the next exciting chapter.

Role Responsibilities

Leadership
• To provide leadership by example, living the values of the charity and engendering
a positive, open and highly supportive working environment; championing a ‘can
do’ culture across the charity.
• To oversee the day-to-day management of all areas of the charity, working
cohesively with the team.
• Create open communication channels with staff and volunteers to ensure that
staff feel supported and valued. Set annual objectives which are regularly
reviewed.
• Champion a culture of innovation and fundraising within the NHS, corporates,
ambassadors and supporters.
• Be responsible for the day-to-day financial management within the charity,
working closely with the Treasurer to prepare budget forecasts and financial
reports to the Board.
• To be familiar with the external environment in which NW Hearts Charity serves,
keeping a close appreciation of emerging trends, health care practices and
political and economic landscapes.


Strategic Development
• Create the charity’s three-year strategic plan, ensuring that it maintains a clear
case for support.
• Remain up to date with both the legal obligations and best practice in fundraising,
marketing and communications, including guidance from relevant regulators and
ensuring that the charity is compliant.
• Develop income generation and fundraising strategies to achieve sustainable
income growth, ensuring that the charity identifies and grasps opportunities as
they arise. Make applications to grant-making trusts as appropriate.
• Maximise fundraising potential with donors including gifts in wills, corporate
partnerships, community and individual givers through all appropriate channels.
• Facilitate the continued expansion and development of the charity through
identification and the submission of potential business case plans for Board
discussion and decision making.

Governance
• To work alongside the Board of Trustees to ensure that the Charitable Objectives are at the forefront of all
plans and activities.
• To support the trustees in their duties and inform decision-making in the best interests of the charity.
Ensure that the Board of Trustees is effectively served with full and timely reports, productive meetings and
effective communication.
• Build and maintain a robust governance infrastructure which safeguards the charity, stakeholders and
trustees, and which exceeds the requirements of regulators such as the Charity Commission and Fundraising
Regulator.
• Ensure that the charity meets all statutory and regulatory obligations, such as Charity Commission
submissions and maintenance of an up to date library of policies and procedures.
• Oversee the management of NW Heart Charity’s activities to protect its financial interests and reserves,
identify and address the main areas of risk.


Relationship Building
• Create opportunities to build and nurture relationships with NHS colleagues to become ambassadors for
our charity in their interactions with patients, families and communities.
• Represent NW Hearts Charity publicly at fundraising events, on social media, via our website, in the use of
digital marketing strategies and in-person, to raise the charity’s profile and generate income.
• Facilitate collaborative working with other stakeholders including public health bodies, corporate agencies
and community groups.


Operational
• Overall management of the charity’s grant-making function. This includes the setting up of funding rounds,
liaison with potential and actual applicants and administrational support to the independent judging panel
and successful grantees. Once awarded, the role includes completion of due diligence of recipients and
monitoring and evaluation of all awarded projects.
• Respond to day-to-day enquiries which arise from time to time via phone calls, generic emails and post to the
office.
• To manage other operational duties as required to ensure the smooth running of the charity.


Other
• To comply with all policies and procedures and with relevant legislation.
• To carry out other duties and lead specific projects as and when agreed with the Board of Trustees.

• Excellent organisational and decision-making skills, with a high level of autonomy and an eye for detail.
• Able to observe and respect confidentiality.
• An innovator who can identify and grasp opportunities for income generation, brand growth and partnership working.
• Work in harmony with the Board, with the skill to disagree agreeably, to challenge different views and to actively listen
to opinions different to your own when needed. To commit to working in the agreed way once decisions have been made
• Excellent IT skills coupled with a keen awareness of emerging technologies.
• Ability to think strategically, whilst managing simultaneous projects, tasks and deadlines.


Essential Experience
• A proven record of achievement in a strategic leadership role in a not-for-profit or public sector organisation.
• Experience of working with a Board.
• Experience of managing staff and volunteers to achieve individual and organisational goals.
• Have strong financial acumen with experience of managing budgets and financial practices.
• A successful track record in the development of income generation activities.
• Experience of developing effective relationships with partners in other organisations, such as the NHS, local
government, business sector and community groups.


Desirable Experience
• Sound knowledge of the makeup and diversity of Greater Manchester.
• A background in a health setting.
• Experience of grant-making.

Hours Per Week: Approx 30 hours - would consider slightly less or slightly more hours
