Purpose of job

This post will support the successful development and implementation of an ambitious 3-year programme to promote positive ageing experiences for Irish people living across England. You will represent Irish in Britain (IiB) as part of a small Positive Ageing team, supporting our member organisations to promote healthy ageing through the development and evaluation of new volunteer-driven health activities.

This work will help inform a longer-term Positive Ageing strategy for older people within Britain’s Irish communities, who have historically faced significant health inequalities compared to other groups. You will work with a caseload of participating IiB member groups across the North of England. 

You will be helping drive the success of this programme by ensuring that appropriate/high-quality capacity-building support is available to participating groups – including regular opportunities for volunteer/staff training and member networking and learning sharing events.

The role will be remote based but involve frequent travel to work with local programme leads and volunteers from participating IiB member groups. You will also work with external public health organisations and charities to broker support (such as volunteer resources, training offers and equipment) to enhance programme development, delivery, reach and impact.

We are the national membership body for Irish community organisations in Britain. We support and represent a diverse network of over 130 members which include Irish community centres, Irish sports/athletics clubs, cultural societies and more. Job description

The Healthy Ageing Project will address specific challenges within the community, while actively promoting healthy ageing in practical and effective ways across our network.

We will focus on the strengths and expertise of our member groups to promote engagement with Ireland's unique music, dance, sport, language and culture.

We will work together with our members throughout this three-year journey. Together, we will develop, launch and promote a project geared towards improving health and wellbeing, reducing health inequality and providing strategic direction for national health programmes and policy recommendations for the Irish community.

This post is part time (17.5 hours per week) and will be based in the North of England, Liverpool, Leeds, Manchester etc.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Build and maintain strong relationships with member groups and local programme leads, under the guidance/direction of IiB’s Health & Wellbeing Lead & Operations Manager/Leadership Team

2. Be a reliable/responsive point of contact for participating members, working with IiB’s Health & Wellbeing Lead, Community Development Officer, and external partners to develop effective training and support for members to launch new Positive Ageing activities in their own organisations/areas

3. Assist local programme leads in identifying unmet health and social needs for older individuals in their communities, through inclusive consultation methods including focus groups and surveys

4. Support local programme leads in engaging/recruiting local volunteers to deliver new pro-social health activities with member support – ensuring essential resources (volunteer job descriptions, advertisements, handbooks, policies/procedures etc.) are developed for members as required

5. Support member new activity development by coordinating training/guidance on activity risk assessment, health and safety planning, activity evaluation/feedback; and other key topics in line with programme and as directed by Health & Wellbeing Lead/Operations Manager

6. Coordinate tailored support/training to participating members to ensure the sustained success/inclusive impact and wider visibility/support of new health initiatives developed by volunteers. Collaborate with IiB colleagues, members, and external partners to organize training and capacity-building events, including peer-to-peer learning opportunities on key topics such as securing local funding for activities and volunteer development/retention

7. Assist Health & Wellbeing Lead in wider programme evaluation by facilitating data monitoring/evaluation activities at local level in collaboration with local programme leads

8. Provide administrative support as needed/directed to Programme Steering Group, including coordination of meetings, agendas, session co-facilitation, note-taking, minutes etc.

9. Build/strengthen partnerships with external stakeholders/partners (including Age UK, Macmillan & Sport England) to maximise external support for participating members

10. Co-deliver membership engagement events to celebrate programme success and maximise participation across IiB’s network - including IiB’s annual Volunteer Awards event

11. Work as directed by Health & Wellbeing Lead to help develop & promote IiB’s long-term Positive Ageing strategy for Irish people in Britain

12. Provide occasional support with events/activities outside of the usual working day (at evenings and weekends) in line with the needs of the programme

13. Ensure due care is taken for the health, safety, and welfare of all staff and that of others, including volunteers, participants in activities, in compliance with IiB health & safety policies and procedures.

14. Undertake all administration and organisational duties associated with the role.

15. Offer flexible and collaborative approach to the project and the wider needs of Irish in Britain including undertaking of any other duties as may be reasonably asked by the post’s line manager.

16. At all times to adhere to the policies and procedures of Irish in Britain

17. Participate fully in any team and other appropriate meetings within Irish in Britain

PERSON SPECIFICATION

You'll be a friendly ‘people person’, with a collaborative, solution-oriented mindset - who has:

• An understanding or strong interest in health & wellbeing for older people

• Experience of working with older people either in a paid or voluntary capacity

• Understanding of and empathy with the issues affecting older people and barriers they experience

• Knowledge of health/sport/culture and other general services for older people in Britain

• Ability to build strong relationships with other stakeholders including public health bodies/charities

• Strong administrative and I.T skills

• Strong verbal and written communication skills

• Strong organisational skills/ability to manage own time effectively

• Unwavering commitment to equality & fairness

• Willingness and ability to work flexibly

• A proactive approach to the personal development of oneself and others

• A ‘Hands on’ approach to coordination and practical tasks as required
