Leadership

There are many different definitions of leadership. One way of thinking about leadership is as the process of motivating and influencing others and maximising efforts towards a shared goal or common purpose.

In the VCSE sector, we may draw on and use leadership skills when leading or managing teams of people (for example paid staff and volunteers), or leading a whole group or organisation. Good leadership enables our groups and organisations to work effectively towards a shared vision and to achieve the positive outcomes that we want to create. Your position or role may include responsibilities as a leader or manager, however, anyone can develop and utilise leadership skills, to help bring about change and achieve a common purpose:

“Leadership is the choice you can make to step up and step in; to decide to take on personal responsibility for making a lasting difference, regardless of whether you are ‘in charge’ or not.”

The Leadership Centre
